About: Human trafficking is a major problem in Michigan. Awareness especially by those in medical roles will help reduce that problem. Many providers have unknowingly encounter victims and could be the difference between freedom and continued capture/torture. This session will be presented by a survivor of sex and labor trafficking that encountered numerous medical professionals during her victimization, this session is built around learning about human trafficking, understanding the medical indicators that can help identity a potential victim of trafficking, environmental indicators for EMT/EMS, and helpful ways to respond from a trauma-informed perspective.
Purpose: To bring awareness to key professional stakeholders who oversee and care for those who are suspected as being connected to human trafficking from pre-hospital setting to the emergency department and beyond. To help health care staff, identify, understand how to work with law enforcement and intervene to reduce human trafficking in Michigan.
