Region 3 Basic Disaster Life Support Course (BDLS)

About the Course: The Basic Disaster Life Support™ (BLDS®) course is a competency-based, awareness-level course that prepares health professionals for the management of injuries and illness caused by disasters and public health emergencies. The course focuses on implementing the DISASTER Paradigm using an “all-hazards” approach to ensure and enhance health workforce readiness.

The BDLS course is designed to engage participants through interactive scenarios and group discussion. The goal is to teach a common lexicon, vocabulary, and knowledge base. Knowledge gained in the course can then be reinforced and expanded through application in the Advanced Disaster Life Support™ (ADLS®) course. Course requirements: (1) registration, (2) completion of prerequisites, (3) attendance and participation, and (4) post-course assessment.

Target Audience: Physicians, Nurses, PAs, EMTs, Paramedics, Pharmacists, Allied Health Professionals, Medical Students, Disaster Response

Continueing Education Credits: In support of improving patient care, Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine is jointly accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team. Credit amount subject to change.

  • Interprofessional Continuing Education—This activity was planned by and for the healthcare team, and learners will receive 7.5 Interprofessional Continuing Education (IPCE) credits for learning and change.

  • Physicians—Western Michigan University Homer Stryker M.D. School of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 7.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
